Friends of Loudoun Mental Health

Goal: $2,000.00

Specific Need

Our fundraising goes directly to families in Loudoun County dealing with a serious mental illness who are also living at or below the Federal Poverty level. We support with these residents with housing and utility subsidies for up to six months.

Friends of Loudoun Mental Health’s mission is to promote a stigma-free environment in Loudoun County in which people affected by mental illness can receive quality treatment and support without judgment or overwhelming financial burden.  We strive to: (1) Promote community awareness of mental health issues, (2) Provide financial and other support services to those struggling with mental illnesses; and (3) Advocate for policies to increase mental health funding, resources, and services.

Since our founding in 1955, Friends of Loudoun Mental Health (Friends) has evolved to meet Loudoun’s immense growth and changing mental health needs. From its inception, Friends’ approach to dealing with mental health issues has been multidimensional: from providing direct assistance, raising community awareness to championing mental health legislation.

Our direct assistance programs include:

  • A Place To Call Home: a homelessness prevention program
  • A Helping Hand: a one-time stipend for housing-related bills
  • Friends Being Friends: fun social opportunities for people living with mental illness
  • Walk With Hope: an outreach program affirming the importance of knowing about and understanding mental illness
  • Suicide Loss Support Group: a monthly meeting/support group for adults
  • Suicide Bereavement 4 Teens: a monthly meeting/support group for teens aged 13-19
  • Mental Health Awareness Month: a month-long focus on mental health programs, in collaboration with the Loudoun County Public Library

Friends of Loudoun Mental Health has a sustaining impact through community awareness activities. We have strong relationships with local church and community groups where we participate in resource fairs and other community outreach.  We also educate the public about resources such as the Loudoun County Sheriff’s CIT Access Center, LINC and PATH.

Friends of Loudoun Mental Health believes in making governmental resources available on many levels, including increased availability for mental health treatment. We have relationships with local and state government agencies and elected officials who we meet with to encourage and impact this platform.
