Girls on the Run of NOVA

Specific Need

Gifts made to Girls on the Run of NOVA via Give Choose 2018 will support financial aid and program fee discounts for girls in Loudoun County.

Girls on the Run of NOVA wants to ensure all local girls have access to high quality youth development programming through Girls on the Run. In order to be responsive to the local community, GOTR NOVA offers need based financial aid as well as program fee discounts for daughters of our Volunteer Coaches, families registering two or more siblings in a single season, and girls from Military and Veteran families. Last fiscal year, 20% of all GOTR NOVA participants received financial aid based on their eligibility for free or reduced lunch and another 19% of participants received a discount on program fees through an additional support pathway.

$153 covers the cost of a full season scholarship for a girl in need.

Mission

Girls on the Run of NOVA has been working for over 17 years to inspire girls throughout Northern Virginia to be joyful, healthy, and confident. GOTR NOVA supports 3rd-8th grade girls in developing the confidence and character they need to become strong, healthy women using a unique, research-based after-school curriculum that creatively integrates running. Supported by 750 Volunteer Coaches each year, we envision a world where each girl knows she has the ultimate power to be her best.

Profile

The GOTR NOVA program is delivered over a 10-week season by trained Volunteer Coaches who mentor and guide the girls through experience-rich lessons that promote healthy lifestyles and a positive self-image.

While in the program, girls participate in activities that focus on promoting skills and values related to self-awareness and self-care, selecting healthy social relationships, and empowering girls to have a voice in their personal well-being as well as the well-being of the larger community. At the end of the season, girls from across the region come together for a noncompetitive 5k event hosted specifically for GOTR NOVA families and friends.

Since 2000, GOTR NOVA has helped more than 60,000 local girls increase their physical activity levels, learn healthy behaviors, and improve their self-esteem by offering evidence-based after-school programming in a team-based setting, rich with female mentors. While our history is rich in innovation and growth, our most significant milestone was the recent shift in strategic focus to more effectively meet the needs of girls from low-income communities.
