LAWS (Loudoun Abused Women's Shelter)

Goal: $64,000.00

Specific Need

Due to  COVID-19, LAWS' team of dedicated and caring staff quickly pivoted its service delivery to ensure all survivors’ needs are met through remote services.  All of our services to clients are still being provided.  We are seeing an increase in the volume of survivors who are unsafe in their homes during this stay at home order.

Also, due to COVID-19, LAWS had to re-schedule Corks for a Cause and Dance-A-Palooza.  This funding loss, as well as the loss of the Dulles Greenway's Drive for Charity, has reduced our planned revenue by approximately $100,000 for FY20 (which ends June 30th).  In addition, we have had to temporarily close the Resourceful Woman Thrift Store - which means a loss in revenue generated from sales.

We are hoping that generous donations through Give Choose can assist in making up for the lost revenue.  LAWS' Board of Directors will be providing a Challenge Gift- stay tuned for the exact amount.  As always, thank you so much for considering donating to LAWS!  We can only provide the critical services survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault need through the caring and giving of donors!

Mission

The mission of Loudoun Citizens for Social Justice/ Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter (LAWS) is to provide victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse with safety, hope and empowerment services to live as survivors free from the effects of violence.

Profile

LAWS is providing all services remotely.  Unfortunately, though, we have had to temporarily closed The Resourceful Woman Thrift Store.

In the last year, we empowered 1,243 victims with the following services:

Emergency Shelter: Our emergency shelter provides a safe haven for victims escaping violence. Victims at our shelter receive safe housing, food, clothing, and case management services to assist them as they begin a violence-free life.

24-Hour Hotline: Our 24-hour crisis hotline provides a confidential place to call for crisis intervention, information and referral services related to domestic and sexual violence.

Legal Services: Our legal services provide consultation and legal representation to victims of domestic and sexual violence. Staff attorneys assist victims with obtaining protective orders and other family law issues such as divorce, child support, and custody. Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault

Counseling and Advocacy: Our professional counselors provide emotional support to victims of domestic and sexual violence as they work towards recovering from the trauma of abuse. Trained advocates connect victims with the resources they need, create safety plans, and provide support during court hearings and forensic medical exams.

Support Groups: Our support groups for adult and child victims of domestic violence and sexual assault give survivors an opportunity to connect with others, reduce the isolation of abuse, and build a network of support.

Youth & Children's Services: Our children's services provide crisis intervention, case management, counseling, support groups, and information to child victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. Information and support is also given to non-offending parents and caregivers through counseling and parenting classes.

Loudoun Child Advocacy Center: Our Child Advocacy Center, which provides a child-friendly location for law enforcement and Child Protective Services to interview children who are suspected victims of child abuse. Trained staff help connect child victims to trauma counseling and coordinate professionals from many Loudoun agencies working together to keep children safe and hold perpetrators accountable.

The Resourceful Woman Thrift Store: Our thrift store accepts gently used clothing and household items to support our shelter program and to provide items survivors in need of clothing and other items.
