The Loudoun Education Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that engages our community to invest in critical and innovative programs to foster the academic success and well-being of students and teachers in Loudoun County Public Schools. Our vision is to make Loudoun County Public Schools the best public school system in the nation. We believe in the mission of LCPS, empowering all students to make meaningful contributions to the world; a strong school system is critical to the vitality and prosperity of Loudoun County; community engagement will have a positive impact on our students' education and future; and it is important to recognize and celebrate the achievement of our schools, students, and teachers.

In 1991, four members of the Loudoun County School Board founded LEF. Since its formation, the LEF has given more than $4,979,693 to support Loudoun's students and teachers.

Our signature program, LEF Teacher Classroom grants, provide teachers with grants of $500 to up to $2,500 for innovative academic projects that cannot normally be funded by the annual school budget.  In awarding grants, the LEF seeks to fund projects that do the following: affect as many students as possible and benefit a diverse student group; involve students with active learning and authentic problem-solving; supplement and/or enhance the standard curriculum; support a program or project with measurable results; and promote inter-classroom, interdisciplinary and/or joint teacher projects.

In addition, the LEF:

  • manages and supports the LEF-LCPS Backpack Coalition, which provides approximately 850 students and their families at various LCPS elementary schools with weekend meals.
  • awards scholarships to current Loudoun County teachers and classified employees for pursuing graduate degrees, advanced training and teacher licensure.
  • supports the Excellence in Education Banquets, honoring the top 5% of graduating high school seniors, and the Outstanding Teacher Recognition Dinner, honoring teachers nominated for the Washington Post Outstanding Teacher Award.
  • sponsors the Loudoun County Public Schools International Youth Leadership Summit (LIYLS), the Regional Science and Engineering Fair and various professional development opportunities, such as the Inspire Loudoun teacher conference.
  • builds partnerships to support various LCPS programs, such as:
    • The EDGE Academy and EDGE Level Up programs: after-school STEM programs designed for economically disadvantaged students in 4th – 6th grade in various middle and elementary schools throughout Loudoun.
    • The Academies of Loudoun: empowering students through exploration, resarch, collaboration, and innovation.
    • Computer Science Immersion Elementary Schools: resources needed to support computer science integration in three of the first-ever Computer Science Immersion public elementary schools in the state of Virginia.

The LEF strategically works with our funders to support needs across all of our schools. Most recently, the LEF partnered with 100WomenStrong to support funding for a full-time Community School Coordinator at Sterling Elementary School, who brings critical resources and programs into the school for our students and families. Through key partners and funders, we helped our most vulnerable students thrive academically and receive basic needs (clothing, medical care, food, etc.) regardless of their socio-economic status. With the support of LCPS, this model will expand to all six Title 1 elementary schools next year to build additional partnerships that bring in both during and after-school activities and programs that support each and every student and family in the school.

Be a part of our success!

  • $100 helps to cover the cost of a student and his/her mentor at the Excellence in Education Banquet.
  • $500 provides a teacher with a grant for an innovative program or project that may otherwise come out of his/her own paycheck.
  • $750 funds a student to participate in a semester of either an EDGE Academy or EDGE Level Up STEM after-school program.
  • $1,000 funds a grant for a teacher who attends the Inspire Loudoun conference and wants to bring new technology to his/her classroom.
