Legacy Farms Virginia

Goal: $5,000.00

Specific Need

Legacy Farms' summer “Flourish & Grow” program offers up to 60 participants with Autism and related challenges eight weeks of direct, personalized instruction in gardening, community interaction, and social skills development.

We are volunteer-run, so contributions are essential to our ability to offer programming.

As part of our mission, we partner with other Loudoun organizations and businesses, to build our garden and create apprentice/internship opportunities for our participants. Your support allows us to:

  • Provide scholarships for individuals with Autism and related disabilities to attend "Flourish & Grow," our eight-week summer program
  • Support teachers who give their time and talents to our eight-week summer program
  • Coordinate with local businesses and food banks to receive flowers, vegetables, and herbs
  • Partner with other local organizations, providing volunteer opportunities for school clubs and youth groups to gain service hours and experience with both gardening and inclusion programming

How will your donation support us?

  • $2,000 supports scholarships, apprenticeships, and paid internships for individuals with Autism & related disabilities
  • $1,000 pays for garden equipment and structures, for example: a set of four 2x8’ cedar cold frames set in the garden to extend our growing season in Spring and Fall
  • $500 covers a full set of attractive packaging materials with Legacy Farms recipe cards for our participants to use as they develop professional skills delivering produce to community partners for eight weeks. (Lightfoot Restaurant, Lansdowne Resort, Loudoun Hunger Relief, Blossom & Bloom, The Paxton Campus)
  • $500 pays for a full set of print marketing materials to be used at local events, letting our community know about program and volunteer opportunities
  • $250 pays for a set of vegetable, herb, and flower seeds for an initial Spring planting of our garden at Temple Hall Farm.
  • $250 pays for a second set of vegetable, herb and flower seeds for subsequent plantings and a second production garden.
  • $100 pays for one set of attractive packaging materials and Legacy Farms recipes cards for our participants to use in delivering our vegetables, herbs, and flowers to one of our community partners for eight weeks (Lightfoot Restaurant, Lansdowne Resort, Loudoun Hunger Relief, Blossom & Bloom, The Paxton Campus).
  • $50 buys 10 packets of seeds.

Mission

Legacy Farms is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing garden-based training and foundational work skills support for teens and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental and social challenges.

Profile

Legacy Farms is committed to helping individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities explore opportunities that advance their employment, education, life skills, health, and well-being. Our programs provide experience with a wide array of gardening and foundational work skills, all designed to give our farmers "hands-on" learning opportunities while contributing to their community.

In the summer, we offer an eight-week, hands-on garden and work skills program called Flourish & Grow. We are also beginning to support indiviudally designed Spring and Fall apprenticeships for those who are interested in gardening and acquiring skills through a mentor/apprentice-style model. Our programming is donation-based and our staff is largely volunteer. An essential part of our participants' learning process and our organization's success is our partnership with community businesses and organizations as well as local donors who support our efforts through programs such as GiveChoose!

Our main production garden is based at Temple Hall Regional Farm in Leesburg. We have installed gardens for others at The Paxton Campus, and also an initial kitchen herb garden at Lansdowne Resort, which is now being expanded as a source of local produce for their new restaurant. Lansdowne, in turn, supports our organization's growth through on-going collaboration for fundraising and new program ideation. Other local partners such as Lightfoot Restaurant and Blossom & Bloom, receive deliveries in the summer from our farm. And A Farm Less Ordinary, Tarara Winery, and Walsh Family Wine coordinate with us to hire participants who are ready to enter the workforce.

We are proud to be deeply engaged with the local Loudoun community, and to work collectively in supporting our participants in gaining the skills needed for successful transition into the workforce!
