40 Years of Serving Loudoun County Residents (1980-2020)

Literacy is an essential human need. It is a crucial element to achieving both personal goals, as well as the goals of our community for creating an area where all residents have the chance to succeed.

Loudoun Literacy Council supports these aspirations by providing area residents with literacy tools, resources, and support to develop young learners, enable parents to participate in the education of their children, and ensure access to opportunities for economic advancement.

Now more than ever, we realize the importance of the services we provide. Imagine someone who doesn’t know English trying to understand fast-paced essential information in today’s challenging environment. Literacy is a Survival Skill!!

As our world has changed, Loudoun Literacy Council has pivoted programs to continue to serve our community of learners in a safe way. We are offering some classes via remote learning and have partnered with Loudoun County Public Schools and our community partners to deliver more than 3,000 books to children and families receiving food and essential services across the community.

Here are our programs:

Through Loudoun Literacy Council’s Family and Adult Literacy programs, participants gain the skills they need to take the most basic and meaningful step toward achieving success and contributing to the community. Our programs reach more than 2,300 residents annually and we distribute almost 15,000 books to children in our community.

Through our Adult Literacy Program, our trained volunteers teach in small group classes and through individual tutoring for adults seeking assistance in basic literacy, English for Speakers of Other Languages, GED preparation, financial literacy, citizenship test preparation, and health literacy.

Our Family Literacy Program provides the literacy-enrichment component to Loudoun's 400+ most at-risk preschoolers through the Head Start and Starting Toward Excellence in Preschool (STEP) Programs in Loudoun County Public Schools. This includes weekly reading in the classrooms, book distribution, and monthly family literacy events for all members of the families served. Our Sweet Dreams Program volunteers visit Loudoun County homeless shelters weekly to read to children and their families, as well as play games, provide snacks, engage in weekly literacy activities, and donate books to those in residence. Through the Baby Book Bundles Program, Loudoun Literacy Council gives literacy tips and baby books to at-risk expectant and new parents. And, through our Book Builder Program, we distribute books in the community, incorporating a community partnership model to enhance and deliver our services.

Help us continue to lift-up lives in Loudoun County by supporting us during #GiveChoose2020. Thank you!
