Loudoun Museum

Mission

As we striveto fulfill our role as the official repository for Loudoun's history, our mission is to discover, conserve, interpret, and disseminate knowledge of Loudoun's culture, history and natural treasures.

We acquire artifacts, curate collections and create interpretive programs that convey meaningful stories with the power to educate, inspire and transform individuals of all ages, and the local, regional, national and international communities that we all serve.

Profile

The Museum is the only general history and cultural museum of Loudoun County. It cares for over 8,000 items that illustrate the history of the County and its inhabitants. It uses the collection to interpret Loudoun history through permanent and changing exhibits and to educate the public about Loudoun history through programs, resource materials and events.

The Museum helps foster heritage tourism throughout the region. Loudoun Museum staff are charged with providing professional care to the collection, employing standards established by the American Association of Museums for accredited institutions in the registration, storage, care and exhibit of artifacts in its custody. Museum collections are on display on a rotating basis throughout the year. Most of the collection is available online at http://www.loudounmuseum.org/exhibits/archives/.

The Museum is committed to expanding the digital display of the collection, in a manner that makes it available as a teaching tool for students, teachers and historians around the globe.

The first online interactive exhibit is available now at http://www.loudounmuseum.org/lucas-heaton-story-map/ We have been honored by the Virginia Association of Museums by earning a certificate for "Virginia's Top 10 Endangered Artifacts 2015" for our outstanding care and conservation of Virginia's history, heritage and culture. This involves the Independent Order of Oddfellows (IOOF) Lodge 26's ceremonial banner of a skeleton used by the IOOF in their meetings. Their lodge at one time was housed in the upper floor of our Museum.

The Loudoun Museum participates in the Town of Leesburg's "First Friday" events by having an open house at Museum and the Log Cabin. We also participate in the Town's "Family Fun Saturday" by having open house at the Museum and scheduling a child friendly event in the Cabin. The Museum also participates in the Town's festivals: Flower and Garden Festival; Arts in the Alley; and others as they are scheduled. The Loudoun Museum is also embarking on partnerships with the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, the Loudoun County Public Libraries, the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Loudoun County and other heritage tourism sites to install offsite Loudoun Museum exhibits that enrich the visitor's experience and encourage visitation at the Museum in downtown Leesburg. This year we are partnering with other heritage areas, parks and governmental entities to supply research and artifacts for upcoming WWI and WWII commemorations.
