Mobile Hope’s mission is to improve the lives of young people, 24 years of age or younger, who are disadvantaged, precariously housed, or homeless in Loudoun County. It is through empathy and compassion that Mobile Hope’s existence acts as a beacon, and a model in our community. We believe all children should grow up in a safe environment with the tools they need to become successful.

We know that behind the face of every young person is a heartbreaking story – a teenage boy abused by his alcoholic parent, a pregnant girl rejected by her guardian or a teenager trying to escape gang membership or a life of forced prostitution. The main causes of youth homelessness can be summed up as being a result of physical, sexual or emotional abuse from parents or guardians.

According to a November 2017 study conducted by Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago entitled, “Voices of Youth Count” state that:

  • 1 in 10 – young adults ages 18-25 endures some form homelessness in a year.
  • 1 in 30 – adolescent minors ages 13-17 endures some form of homelessness in a year.

The study concludes that “adolescents and young adults represent a key developmental window. Every day of housing instability represents missed opportunities to support healthy development and transitions to productive adulthood.”

Other studies find that:

  • 57% of homeless kids spend at least one day every month without food
  • Nearly 50% of youth in shelters report intense conflict or physical harm by a family member as major contributing factor to their homelessness.
  • 50% of the adolescents aging out of foster care and juvenile justice systems will be homeless within 6 months because they are unprepared to live independently and have limited education and no social support.

Furthermore, even though Loudoun County is known as one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, studies of the area tell a different story.

  • In Loudoun County, there are more than 2,200 children that have been identified as homeless in the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) this past school year using the McKinney-Vento definition of homelessness.  That definition states that a school age child is homeless if they “lack a regular, fixed and adequate night time residence”. What is more alarming is that 30% of those children are unaccompanied.
  • The recent Needs Assessment that was completed by Loudoun County reports that Mobile Hope is the ONLY organization that supports the needs of homeless youth.

Mobile Hope is a cutting-edge organization that is committed to standing up for these young people and creating evidence-based solutions to improve the lives of those who have no other place to turn. Our supporters have remarkable opportunity to join us in addressing, and ultimately to end youth homelessness in Loudoun County.
