SCAN of Northern Virginia

Goal: $5,000.00

Specific Need

• A $25 donation can provide a meal while a family attends virtual or in-person parenting courses to create safe and nurturing environments for Loudoun's most vulnerable children.
• A $100 donation can provide for new facilator training  to mentor, coach and support at-risk parents and children.
• A $250 donation can provide a 2-hour trauma awareness training for over 50 child-serving professionals in our community to equip them with tools needed to assist victims of trauma.
• A $500 donation can give one local family access to an 8-week parenting class, including free dinner and childcare. Parenting classes build resiliency and improve parent-child communications and are offered in Spanish or English.
• A $1,000 donation can provide science-based interviewing (FETI) training for two front-line social service or law enforcement professionals in our community to enhance the way they interact and gain information from victims of abuse or trauma.

The risk factors for child abuse and neglect are converging during this crisis, while at the same time, vulnerable children are losing their protective factors due to social isolation and increased family stress and trauma.

SCAN of Northern Virginia was founded in 1988 by a group of citizens who were concerned about child abuse and neglect and their tragic implications for children, families, and communities. In 2018, SCAN celebrated its 30th anniversary serving vulnerable children and families in Northern Virginia. In 2019, SCAN opened a second office in Loudoun County. Over the past three decades, SCAN has grown from an all-volunteer entity to a well-respected regional organization with ten full-time and five part-time staff.

SCAN is the only Northern Virginia organization whose sole focus is on education and advocacy efforts that prevent child abuse and neglect. SCAN does not duplicate existing services in each jurisdiction but seeks to engage child welfare and school professionals in regional public education efforts and to provide services that address gaps in parent education and victim advocacy for children.

SCAN's vision is that every child in Northern Virginia will grow up in a safe, stable, nurturing family, with the supports each child needs to contribute to stronger communities today and as an adult tomorrow.
