St. Gabriel´s Episcopal Church

Goal: $2,500.00

Specific Need

Saint Gabriel's Give Choose 2020 funds will cover the food costs for three community appreciation events to honor and encourage the 200 students, their family members, and volunteers who are directly impacted by our literacy programs. The literacy programming includes Spanish literacy for children and teens; STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) classes for children, teens and adults; ESL (English as a Second Language), GED, and citizenship classes for adults.

With the expansion of our literacy programs, particularly the technology-dependent STEM classes, we require a robust Wi-Fi Hotspot network for more user access. The cost for an increased Hotspot bandwidth is approximately $1,500/year through our Verizon carrier.

The mission of Saint Gabriel’s Literacy Programs is to provide life-skills community services to underserved Loudoun County residents to flourish, prosper, and gain self-confidence.

Saint Gabriel’s literacy programming is the community-based social justice arm of St. Gabriel's ministries. The mission of St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church is to: “Encounter God, build meaningful relationships, and make a difference in the world.”

St. Gabriel’s literacy programs are not religious in nature. The classes all take place at the Leesburg Apartments, the apartment used is a community educational site maintained by the Loudoun County government and welcoming to all Loudoun County residents.

The impact of Saint Gabriel’s social justice literacy programs increases the public health of our town and county by providing education, justice, equity, awareness, and dignity to its students. The focus of social justice in our programs provide participants a leg-up through education. The space we use is safe, familiar and accessible to the neighbors so that they are comfortable attending the programs while developing skills to become more resourceful and proficient at navigating personal and professional opportunities.

Our life skills-based literacy programs subscribe to the Paulo Freire popular education model which implements a dialogical manner between educator and participant, giving everyone an awareness and confidence in their natural gifts and talents. This methodology encourages mutual trust and honors the skills of all participants (students and teachers alike) regardless of age, class, language ability, or literacy fluencies. The literacy programs help transform us all so that we can help transform our families and communities; this is the premise of a “people’s-centered” education – popular education and of a public health model in a community.

Accessibility: Our programs are delivered where the most socio-economically vulnerable residents of Leesburg and Loudoun County live, so the participants have greater access to our life skills literacy programs. Accessibility to services enhances the public health of a community and there is ample published evidence to prove this statement and that also affirms that any form of literacy not only impacts the participant but successive generations thereafter. Therefore, our literacy programs have a positive impact on our participants lives and of the community at large.
