Spanish-Language Literacy Program: Saint Gabriel's Episcopal Church

Goal: $2,000.00

Specific Need

Give Choose 2019 will help cover the costs to update the multi-level children's Spanish language curriculum, transportation for children's special events, and an end of semester celebration for up to 80 participants: volunteers, donors, friends of the program.

The mission of Saint Gabriel’s Literacy Programs is to provide life skills community services to underserved Loudoun County residents.

Saint Gabriel’s literacy programs are the community-based social justice arm of the church’s ministries. The mission of St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church is to: “Encounter God, build meaningful relationships, and make a difference in the world.”

St. Gabriel’s literacy programs are not religious in nature, provided in an apartment complex maintained by the Loudoun County government, and welcome to all Loudoun residents. Religious diversity is encouraged and there are currently Muslim participants in the programs.

The overall impact of Saint Gabiel’s social justice literacy programs is increased education, justice, equity, awareness, and dignity. The social justice focus of our programs is to provide participants a leg up through education. The literacy programs have built a safe, supportive, inviting space for immigrants and their children to develop life skills to become more self-sufficient and proficient at navigating personal and professional opportunities in Loudoun County.

Our life skills-based literacy programs subscribe to the Paulo Freire popular education model which implements a dialogical manner between educator and educand, giving them all an awareness and confidence in their natural gifts and talents. This methodology encourages mutual trust and honors the skills of all participants (students and teachers alike) regardless of age, class, language ability, or literacy fluencies. The literacy programs help transform us all so that we can help transform our families and communities; this is the premise of a “people’s-centered” education – popular education.

Accessibility: Because our programs are delivered where the immigrant residents of Leesburg and Loudoun County live or worship (The Fields of Leesburg and ADAMS), participants have greater access to our life skills literacy programs. Convenient access to education enhances the public health of a community. There is extensive public health research that supports this statement and also affirms that any form of literacy not only impacts the participant but successive generations thereafter. Therefore our literacy programs have a positive impact on our participants and in the community at large.
