StoryBook Treasures

Goal: $5,000.00

Specific Need

Response to COVID-19

StoryBook Treasures recently assembled over 375 “SBT Learning Kits” to support the distance learning needs of our Loudoun County SBT students in K-3rd grade. Many SBT students do not have access to school supplies at home to support and engage them in learning while schools are closed. We will deliver distance learning kits to the homes of every Loudoun County SBT student. Each kit contains a school supply pouch with pencils, an eraser, a pencil sharpener, a box of crayons, scissors, glue sticks, a StoryBook Treasures t-shirt, and a Mo Willems, Elephant and Piggie book or Frog and Toad book by Arnold Lobel to add to their SBT home library.

We are seeking funds to cover these kits that have been assembled and delivered to some of our counties most vulnerable students.

StoryBook Treasures exists to put books into the hands of children who need them the most.

StoryBook Treasures (SBT), a nonprofit with the mission of putting books into the hands of children who need them the most, was founded by Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) veteran teacher and Loudoun County Teacher of the Year, Denise Corbo. Seeking ways to engage all of her students and their families in literacy, the SBT program was created in her kindergarten classroom. After every student in her class received a perfect score on the end of the year literacy test (PALS) she instantly knew she needed to find a way to share her program and technique with other teachers. It was then, in 2012, that she decided to a take a part time job as a limo driver to generate funds to start StoryBook Treasures.

In 2015 SBT launched in two schools serving 211 students. We have experienced rapid growth and expect to distribute over 30,000 books to 6,000 students across 5 states this school year. We attribute the unbelievable growth and success to the overall impact on student achievement and family engagement.

SBT provides a powerful, all-inclusive turnkey school to home literacy enrichment program for grades PreK through 3rd. The program is implemented by licensed early childhood education experts, the child’s own classroom teacher. The SBT program is different than other reading programs in that it is created by teachers and is specifically designed to close the literacy achievement gap through reading, story comprehension, and family engagement.
