Women Giving Back

Goal: $2,000.00

Specific Need

We need to raise $2,000 to provide 900 kids with snack packs this summer!

In one of the richest regions in the U.S., one in ten kids do not know where their next meal is coming from and more than 10,000 children go to bed hungry each night because they do not have reliable access to nutritious food.

WGB helps supply kids with nutritional breakfasts while their mothers shop, because these children often miss their breakfast shift at the shelter to come to WGB.  Our Snack Pack program is a complement to this mission after noticing that the only meals that many of the children who are not living in shelters receive is at school. Under the Snack Pack program, children at risk of weekend hunger receive a bag of food that is child-friendly, nutritious, nonperishable and easy to eat. Each Snack Pack provides enough food that a child can easily assemble into two-day meals to take home during the school year, summer and holiday breaks.

Currently a limited number these snack packs items are donated and then assembled by volunteer groups, usually at an off-site location, and delivered to WGB. Without dedicated funding to purchase the snack pack items, it is difficult to control the nutritional value of the items in the snack packs. Therefore, we seek support from to be able to supplement the donated items by purchasing nutritional snack pack items to ensure optimal nutritional value for the children we serve.

Mission

WGB's mission is to support women and children in crisis, and build their confidence and self-esteem, by providing great quality clothing at no cost, assisted by caring and committed volunteers who offer personalized service and interaction.

Profile

Women Giving Back (WGB) opened its doors in 2007 to offer women in the Greater Washington Metro area experiencing poverty and homelessness access to the basic human need of clothing. Many people mistake WGB for just free clothing services. But we are so much more than that! WGB's caring volunteers ensure that clients are treated with open arms and receive the best possible services to give women the time and support to stabilize, heal, and make positive life changes. WGB connects clients to other resources to address other barriers (education, public benefit programs, mental health and health care) all related to moving towards self-sufficiency.

We envision a community in which women and children in crisis have access to the basic human need of clothing.

There are a limited number of clothing closet available in the area these community members when their budget gets stretched or they experience a crisis. We provide a direct benefit to at least 9,000 women and children per year - homeless women and children living in shelters, transitional housing facilities, and safe houses in DC, MD and VA, or living at or below the federal poverty line.

WGB's boutique like space sets it apart from any other "clothing closet" in the area. The space is decorated like a high-end boutique complete with ornate light fixtures and purple walls to signify domestic violence awareness. Positive quotes and art work can be found all around the walls providing messages of inspiration and strength. The boutique displays are styled by volunteers allowing clients to see an outfit put together for an interview or work.

WGB volunteers also make the space welcoming and inviting to the clients. Volunteers are trained to uphold WGB's values which make the clients feel like they are shopping at Nordstrom rather than a "clothing closet". Unlike some career focused clothing providers, WGB also provides casual clothing as a majority of the women served only need "career apparel" for the interviews and many work or seek work in retail, hospitality and service industries. We serve women fleeing domestic violence and human trafficking who need a whole new wardrobe for themselves and their children after leaving all their belongings behind.

We also provide for children and youth, as a warm coat, shoes that fit and a wardrobe of school clothing help them put their best foot forward every day. By making them feel comfortable and confident in the classroom, they are better able to focus on their studies and fit in with their peers.
