Bridle Paths

Goal: $3,000.00

Specific Need

Bridle Paths is an all-volunteer organization that offers meaningful paths to connection, in partnership with horses. We provide therapeutic horseback riding instruction, equine-assisted learning, and equine-assisted psychotherapy services to individuals and families faced with physical, cognitive, psychological, and emotional needs.

Bridle Paths serves children and adults with challenges that are often invisible - attention deficit disorder, autism spectrum disorders, anxiety and depression, seizure disorders, brain injuries, post traumatic stress, and trauma. We also serve veterans, service members, and their families, at no cost to them.

Our clients rely on us to provide a space of safety, authenticity, and community.

The Covid-19 crisis has affected Bridle Paths significantly in many ways.

(1) Our emotionally vulnerable clients suffer from the inability to gather with our horses and our volunteers in person, and we lack wifi and other capabilities to provide virtual sessions. Program revenues have dropped precipitously.

(2) Volunteer support is greatly reduced as a consequence of Virginia's stay-at-home order, and donor support has dwindled.

(3) Horse care expenses continue unabated.

HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP!

Support in any amount is welcome, and will enable us to maintain connection between our clients and our horses during this difficult time.

DINING PLAN SPONSOR - $25 will purchase one bag of grain, and $250 will purchase enough grain to feed our horses for one month

TECH SUPPORT SPONSOR - $60 will provide one month of wifi service, and $750 will help us to procure annual wifi and related equipment and services

HOOF-HEARTED SPONSOR - $130 will purchase two new shoes (and customized fitting!) for one horse for one month, and $1,000 will provide horseshoes for our herd for one month

IMMUNITY BUILDERS SPONSOR - $125 will pay for one chiropractic session for equine wellness, and $1,500 will provide vaccines for our herd for one year

MANURE MOVERS SPONSOR - $375 will purchase one truckload of sawdust to bed our horses' stalls, and $2,000 will provide for stall cleaning and horse and barn care for one month

SALAD BAR SPONSOR - $100 will purchase a week's supply of hay for our horses, and $2,500 will purchase hay to feed our horses for six months

HORSEPOWER SPONSOR - $12,000 will cover the cost of caring for one of our herd members for one year

YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE!

Mission

The mission of Bridle Paths is to offer strength, support, and healing to individuals and families through safe, effective, and high-quality equine-assisted activities and therapies.

Profile

Bridle Paths serves those with a wide variety of needs and diagnoses, including attention deficit disorder, autism spectrum disorders, cognitive impairments, anxiety and depression, genetic problems, seizure disorders, brain injuries, post traumatic stress, and trauma.

It is our vision to sustain an environment and an opportunity for our clients to connect, communicate, and trust, in partnership with horses.

Our work is guided by our values, which include:

Respect for the individual, both human and equine

Focus on abilities and possibilities, rather than on labels and diagnoses

Delivery of safe, ethical, and emotionally-attuned services

During 2019, Bridle Paths provided an expanded array of services, with a consistent emphasis on relationships, communication, and meaningful paths to connection, in partnership with horses. Outlined below are some milestones from 2019.

  • The Bridle Paths program was incorporated in 2012, and since its inception has grown to provide more than 700 client sessions annually. The program benefits tremendously from volunteer assistance, with total volunteer hours contributed in 2019 totaling more than 7,000.
  • We served 32 unique therapeutic riding clients, and 15 unique equine-assisted psychotherapy clients.
  • We served approximately 60 unique veterans and service members in nearly 70 sessions, in collaboration with the Virginia Department of Veterans Services, Serve Our Willing Warriors, and VA Medical Center Martinsburg.
  • We received a VA Adaptive Sports Grant in the amount of $40,000 to provide six, eight-week group equine therapy series for veterans and service members.
  • We conducted an eight-week EAL and internship program for young adults with autism spectrum disorders, funded by a generous grant from Autism Speaks. Each of the four young adults who participated in this program is completing an internship project with the program in areas such as facility safety, website design, video production, and records maintenance.
  • We provided three eight-week groups for adult survivors of traumatic brain injury, funded by a $9,600 grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.
  • Bridle Paths hosted two Masterson Method Equine Specialist workshops for equine professionals from the United States and Canada, and program president Katie Fallon received her certification as a Masterson Method Equine Specialist.
  • We hosted a Level 1 Equine-Facilitated Learning training for the Human Equine Relational Development (HERD) Institute. Program President Katie Fallon was invited to join the HERD Institute faculty, and we will be hosting equine-facilitated learning certifications with the HERD Institute in 2020.
  • Program President Katie Fallon was recognized in the Loudoun100 initiative.

Bridle Paths is a proud member of the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce, the Loudoun County Equine Alliance, and the Virginia Horse Council.  Additionally, Bridle Paths is a member of the Therapeutic Riding Association of Virginia, the Professional Association for Therapeutic Horsemanship Intl. (PATH Intl.), and the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA), and our staff holds certifications from PATH Intl. and EAGALA.

Community support is essential to the continued vitality of the Bridle Paths program, and we are exceedingly grateful to those who share their time and treasure to enhance and expand our programs. Every dollar counts, and helps us to care for our exceptional program horses, fund our operating expenses, and enhance our innovative programs that foster connection and healing.
