Opportunities, Alternatives, and Resources (OAR)

Specific Need

One of the most significant concerns for OAR clients is obtaining and keeping stable housing. The Prison Policy Initiative, a think-tank, estimates that formerly incarcerated individuals are ten times more likely to be homeless than those who are not justice-impacted.

Last year, the median cost of living in the cities and towns of Loudoun were prohibitively high for so many. Here is a list of what a one bedroom apartment costs per month in our towns:

Leesburg: $1,836     Ashburn: $1,908   Sterling: $1,735   Purcellville: $1,688

This steep monthly cost is a challenge to many seeking affordable housing. Additionally, individuals on probation or parole may have their rental applications rejected outright since they have a history of incarceration, and local homeless shelters are often full or only accept women and/or families with children. And when finding employment with a criminal background is already difficult, the barriers to successful reentry and creating a new life post-incarceration can feel insurmountable.

OAR case managers provide various services to address these obstacles and create stability for our clients. One of the most impactful stabilizing factors is access to housing. Whenever possible, OAR arranges housing before a client is released. OAR also assists with utility payments, rent, or lease payments for housing. OAR also provides hotel stays in cases where housing options were unable to be secured pre-release. OAR has worked with hotel owners in the area to provide long term stays for these individuals at reduced rates. OAR also helps clients with substance abuse and mental health referrals, physical health referrals, and financial support for any necessary treatments. OAR can step in to support clients in need of housing before it's too late, but we can only do it with your help!

Together we can reduce homelessness and housing insecurity for the justice-impacted community members of Loudoun County by providing rental assistance, security deposits, emergency housing, and utility bills, and together we can make a difference. Donate Now!
