Station Stitchers

Goal: $3,000.00

Specific Need

Our needs are simple.

1)  Funds and Supplies - We need monetary ($$) funding and in-kind donations to supply the making of quilts.  Our biggest expenses are for batting and thread.  We also welcome good quality, cotton fabric donations.  Our quilts are made of 100% cotton to avoid any allergy-related issues with our hospital donations.  Any sewing-related donations that cannot be used in our studio are used as fund-raising items in our local sales efforts.  If you have an unused sewing machine sitting around, we would love to have it!  Give us a call at 571/271-3045.

2)  Volunteers - We need volunteers.  We are a 100% volunteer run organization.  As we expand our offerings and what we produce, we need more volunteers to help us accomplish our goals.  No sewing experience is required.  We teach our volunteers every step of making quilts and how to sew.

3)  Work Space - We need a new, more cost-effective work space.  Our lease will expire in the next 14 months and we are looking for a good alternative that does not command the premium as that of a retail space.  If you know of such a place, please contact us!  We would love to talk with you.

Mission

Station Stitchers’ primary mission is to make quilts for hospital patients with acute care needs and for veterans organizations. We deliver quilts year-round to Inova Hospital in Loudoun County, Virginia, for patients receiving Oncology or Dialysis treatment or are in the ICU, NICU, Pediatrics, and Oncology departments. We also make bedding for in-country Veteran-related organizations, such as Willing Warriors’ Retreat in Haymarket, Boulder Crest Retreat in Bluemont, and Hero Homes in Loudoun County, VA. We comfort the sick.

During this time of Covid19, many of our volunteers have also been busy sewing masks in support of community needs.  While not part of our original mission, it has become an important adjunct in our work to help meet the needs of those providing front-line service to the community.  We bring our sewing skills to the forefront during this pandemic crisis.

Profile

Since its inception, Station Stitchers has donated more than 2200 quilts to our community and Inova Hospital in Loudoun County. In 2019, we created and donated 407 quilts and our goal this year is to exceed 500.  In this time of Covid 19, hospital admissions are higher and our quilts are wanted, needed, and cherished more than ever.

Through the attainment of our sewing goals, we accomplish many things:

1) We encourage ongoing volunteerism - Station Stitchers is a 100% volunteer led organization with no paid employees.

2) We encourage the spirit of giving in our community - All materials and equipment used to make our quilts are funded through generous donations from community sponsors. From the sale of some donations, we raise funds to buy needed supplies like batting, thread, etc. and to pay for our ongoing operating expenses.

3) We provide a safe haven for our participating volunteers, ages 14 to 99 - The Station Stitchers studio provides a place of friendship, mentor-ship, creativity and inspiration for everyone who enter its doors.  As a result of the Covid19 pandemic, we have closed our studio to group activities, although our long-arm quilters have continued to work individually at the studio, while sewers have been able to continue their creative activities from home.

We continue to support our volunteers with fabric, kits, and sewing supplies.  We have produced products for the needs of our community at levels far outpacing our original expectations.
