Anna Sudha Community Kitchens

Goal: $50,000.00

Specific Need

Even in one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, many Loudoun residents struggle to afford nutritious food. Food insecurity has risen sharply, affecting students, working families, single-parent households, immigrants, and individuals experiencing homelessness. Nearly 24% of households fall below the ALICE threshold—earning too much to qualify for traditional assistance, yet not enough to cover basic living costs like housing, childcare, and food.

The Nourish Network Program by Anna Sudha Community Kitchens addresses this urgent need by providing consistent access to freshly prepared meals and essential groceries, ensuring that families can stretch limited income toward critical expenses while maintaining dignity, nutrition, and stability. It also fills gaps left by inconsistent pantry support and limited access to culturally appropriate meals, creating a reliable, inclusive solution for vulnerable residents.

Mission

Our mission is to spread love through food. Nourishing both the body and the community, while fostering inclusion, dignity, and connection for all.

Profile

Anna Sudha Community Kitchens (ASCK) addresses the urgent and growing issue of food insecurity in Loudoun County. Despite being one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, many residents struggle to consistently access nutritious food. Food insecurity has risen sharply in recent years—from about 4% in 2020 to nearly 7% by 2022—impacting tens of thousands of individuals. Among Loudoun County Public Schools students, 28% qualify for free or reduced-price meals, highlighting the financial pressures faced by working families. Additionally, nearly 24% of households—over 34,600 families—fall below the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) threshold, meaning they earn above the federal poverty level but still cannot reliably meet basic needs such as housing, childcare, transportation, healthcare, and food.

These challenges are compounded by rising grocery prices, inflation, housing costs, and uncertainty in federal nutrition programs. Families living paycheck to paycheck are often forced to choose between paying rent, utilities, or medical bills and buying food. Newly arrived immigrant and refugee families, individuals experiencing homelessness, people living in vehicles, single-parent households, and working families juggling multiple part-time jobs are disproportionately affected. Many rely on inconsistent pantry support or lack access to freshly prepared, culturally appropriate meals—leading to skipped meals, poor nutrition, and increased instability.

ASCK’s work is organized through The Nourish Network Program, a comprehensive approach to food security that ensures individuals and families can access reliable, nutritious meals and groceries—helping them preserve limited income for other essential expenses. The program prioritizes dignity, cultural sensitivity, and community connection, while also creating inclusive volunteer opportunities.

Core Programs within The Nourish Network Program include:

  • Shelter Feeding Program
ASCK provides freshly prepared meals to residents of the Loudoun Homeless Shelter, ensuring consistent access to nutritious food for individuals and families experiencing housing instability.

  • LCPS PEP Meals Donation Program
In partnership with Loudoun County Public Schools’ Parents as Educational Partners (PEP) initiative, ASCK delivers healthy meals to low-income students and their families, supporting school engagement and family stability.

  • In-Kitchen Dining Program
ASCK offers hot, freshly prepared meals in a welcoming, low-barrier kitchen setting for individuals experiencing homelessness, people living in vehicles, and community members facing immediate food insecurity—providing dignity, safety, and reliable access to food for those with limited cooking or storage options.

  • Open Pantry Program
ASCK’s open pantry distributes essential groceries—including staples, fresh produce, and culturally appropriate items—to working families, single parents, immigrants, and households below the ALICE threshold who may not qualify for federal assistance.

  • Inclusive Volunteer Program
Through partnerships with Makom Life, local group homes, and the LCPS CAST (Career and Academic Skills Training) Program, ASCK creates inclusive volunteer opportunities for individuals with disabilities and special needs. Participants engage in meal preparation, packaging, and distribution while building skills, confidence, and community connections.

Together, these programs ensure consistent access to nutritious food while strengthening community ties and promoting dignity for all. ASCK’s reach has grown rapidly—serving over 240 unduplicated Loudoun County residents in 2024 and increasing to 790 individuals in 2025. The organization continues to expand its impact, with the capacity to serve more than 1,100 unduplicated individuals annually, meeting the evolving needs of the Loudoun County community.
