Founded in 1995, Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy (LWC) is a volunteer-powered, membership-based nonprofit in Loudoun County, Va. We PROTECT, PRESERVE, and RESTORE wildlife habitat, shaping a Loudoun where people and wildlife thrive together.

Loudoun is often touted as the “richest” county in America, but what truly makes us "rich?" Before the development boom that began here several decades ago, our wealth was measured by the unique natural beauty of our abundant farmland, streams, meadows, open spaces, and wildlife.

Today, the wildlife habitat we cherish and the myriad benefits of nature we depend on face more challenges than ever. For example:

  • “Data Center Alley” in eastern Loudoun features the highest concentration of data centers in the world, with each new center certain to produce negative impacts on wildlife habitat.
  • We lose an estimated 13 acres of wetlands and 20,000 feet of streams annually.
  • Our children are part of the broader and sobering national epidemic of excessive screen time. National numbers claim children spend an average of only 4-7 minutes per day outside in unstructured play vs. 7 hours or more a day in front of a screen.
  • Forest cover continues to be lost to residential housing and commercial development.
  • Loudoun owns the highest rate of wildlife/vehicle collisions in Virginia due to ongoing species displacement.
  • Northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area are among the places where scientists predict no stars will be visible in 20 years due to light pollutiom.
  • The spread of invasive plants continues to threaten local ecosystems while posing additional threats to safety, health, and our local economy.

There's good news, however: Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy is facing each of these challenges — and many more — head-on. Over the last 30 years, we’ve turned numerous challenges into significant wins thanks to our dedicated supporters and volunteers. Join us, support us, and add your powerful voice to a rising chorus of Loudoun residents who wish to preserve the unique beauty of our county for generations to come while inspiring younger generations to reconnect with the timeless benefits only nature can provide.

DOUBLE THE IMPACT OF YOUR GIFT!

GREAT NEWS: Thanks to a passionate group of supporters (including members of our Board, individual donors, and partner Abernethy & Spencer  Greenhouse and Garden Center), we have raised $10k in a Give Choose matching challenge! That means your gift will be effectively DOUBLED in impact for the first $10,000 raised! Don't miss the chance to make TWICE the impact for wildlife with your gift, and help us reach our overall goal of $20k raised this year ($10k raised through donations + the $10k match)!

Mission

Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy's mission is to protect, preserve, and restore wildlife habitat.

Profile

In 1995, three concerned residents gathered around a farmhouse kitchen table in Loudoun County, Va., determined to protect local wildlife habitat from the pressures of rapid development and population growth. From those impassioned discussions, Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy (LWC) took root.

Today, LWC has grown into the largest, most comprehensive environmental organization in Loudoun County. As a volunteer-powered, membership-based nonprofit, we focus our vital work on four difference-making areas:

  • Education: We host hundreds of free nature programs and field trips annually while delivering Nature-Based Learning programs in local K-12 classrooms.
  • Community Science: We mobilize volunteers to monitor the health of our ecosystems and share critical data with local, state, and national organizations.
  • Habitat Conservation: We champion native plants, remove invasive species, train property owners in land stewardship, and restore local habitats, including our JK Black Oak Wildlife Sanctuary, an 89-acre globally rare wetlands in Lucketts we proudly own and manage.
  • Conservation Advocacy: We empower our local community to advocate for legislation that safeguards wildlife habitat and promotes responsible development.

See some inspiring examples of what support from donors like you made possible in 2025!

What began with three community members around a kitchen table has grown into a rich, thriving legacy embraced by thousands. We’ve accomplished so much since 1995, but there’s so much more to be done ... and we can't do it without you.

Together, as one united force of nature, we're ready to achieve so much more in 2026. On behalf of all of us at Loudoun Wildlife, and the wildlife we represent, THANK YOU!
