Profile
The Family One: Building a Stronger Loudoun, One Connection at a Time
In Loudoun County, the shadow of "the gap" is real. While our community is a hub of innovation and wealth, many of our youth face a quiet crisis of isolation, food insecurity, and a lack of professional guidance. At The Family One (TFO), we don't just provide services—we build a stabilizing bridge. We are dedicated to empowering under-resourced youth (ages 12–18) by providing the high-impact mentorship and foundational resources they need to transform from crisis-intervention to economic self-sufficiency.
Our Pillars of Impact: Mentorship as the Anchor
We believe that academic and professional success is impossible without emotional and social stability. Our 12-staff mentors are embedded in the community, providing:
-
The Essential Connection: Daily check-ins and safety audits to ensure basic needs like food and shelter are met.
-
Skill-Building & STEAM: Bridging the digital divide through tech-focused career exploration.
-
Mental Wellness: Creating a "security-first" environment where youth can navigate trauma and build resilience.
Community & Family Bonds: Our Loudoun Legacy
We know that a child thrives only when their village is strong. TFO creates the "Town Square" for Loudoun through high-engagement programming that heals, celebrates, and educates.
Family Fest: The Heartbeat of the Community
Our flagship event, Family Fest, recently shattered records with over 1,800 community members in attendance. It is more than a festival; it is a mobilization of joy. With live performances, gaming trucks, and free community resources, we create a space where families from all backgrounds can connect without the barrier of cost.
Generational Strength: Father’s Day Basketball
We tackle the importance of fatherhood head-on. Our annual Father’s Day Basketball Game brings families together for friendly competition, celebrating the vital role of male mentorship and family bonding. It is a day where we prove that sports are the ultimate tool for community stabilization.
Innovation in Expression: The AR Arts Program
In a unique programe pioneering a student-driven Arts initiative. Our youth aren't just painting; they are integrating Augmented Reality (AR) and music to tell their stories. Providing a global platform for their work, we are training the next generation of creative technologists and artists.
The Health Summit: A Blueprint for Wellness
Wellness is a four-way street. Our annual Health Summit facilitates raw, actionable dialogue around four critical pillars:
-
Physical Health: Reclaiming our bodies through movement and nutrition.
-
Wealth & Finance: Breaking cycles of poverty with financial literacy.
-
Mental Wellness: Destigmatizing the conversation around youth mental health.
-
Youth Engagement: Giving our students a seat at the leadership table.

Written Testimony:
"I love working with the mentors, in class, I learn one subject, and with the mentors I learn about all subjects during our conversations.

"When our son first started with you guys, he was having these angry outbursts where he would be so mad he would scream, throw things, break things etc and it would take hours to call him down. Monday, his friends were messing with him on the game and he went nuts. Screaming and slamming things. I went to his room and asked him to calm down, take a deep breath, don't let other people get you like this. He said ok (with tears in his eyes) and started to take some deep breaths. Within 5 minutes all was well and he was calm. I never thought we'd get to see that!
We could not be more proud of him and the work he has put in. But I also wanted to just mention it to you two so you can see first-hand the impact you have on our young youth..and the impact for us parents too! "

"I met Benjamin and Derrick at the 2020 LCPS mental health and wellness symposium. I have stayed in touch with them, and their personal stories tie well into their mission with mentoring. I appreciate how Benjamin and Derrick bring a variety of experiences that students can learn from: Loudoun County High School alumni, college, entrepreneurship, fine arts, athletics, coaching, and community activism.
Additionally, last year they were instrumental in assisting as mentors with Freedom HS’s Leadership Academy, working with 12th graders who needed help deciding what they wanted to do after graduation. I have enjoyed keeping track of their presentations and speaking engagements over the past year, including to the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors. I have also kept Ben and Derrick updated on our LCPS Equity efforts, and we have discussed their willingness to be a resource to students who need additional help to process racial identity development questions and assisting students in dealing with racial incidents at school."

"I had a fantastic mentorship with Mr. Ben and Mr. Derrick, and have made a lot of progress with my work ethic and future plans. I have decided to study Business Marketing and potentially double major or minor in Music. I have also considered getting my master's in Management!”

"I cannot tell you how many other mentors and administrators commented on the work you two have done with our students! I hope you guys will be able to continue your involvement as your business plan evolves because your work is so meaningful. One thing I admire about you two is the light touch you have with the kids. You'll discuss basketball as long as they want, but you will slip in life advice almost unnoticed."
