Specific Need
Before home, there is care.
Every animal that arrives at FOHA comes with a story. Many arrive with something else too: a medical need that has to be met before anything else can happen.
Milk Jug is finishing treatment for heartworm disease, nearing the end of a long recovery. Skywalker is just beginning his. Angel arrived from Atlanta, GA, undertreated for the same disease, and FOHA is giving her the care she didn't get the first time. Doris came to us in pain she couldn't describe. A fractured tooth had exposed the nerve and left her hurting in silence. Dogs hide dental pain well. FOHA found it. She is in surgery today. Isabella and Melody arrived together from a home with 50 cats, both FIV-positive and needing dental care at just five and a half years old. They arrived together. They will be adopted together.
Some animals need heartworm treatment. Some need surgery. Some need medications, diagnostics, or extended monitoring before they are stable enough to be adopted. Some need time, and someone willing to give it.
Before the adoption photos and the new beginnings, there is treatment. Recovery. Patience. That care happens every day at FOHA.
Your Give Choose donation funds the veterinary care animals need when they first arrive. Every gift helps ensure that when an animal arrives at FOHA needing help, we can say yes.
Will you help provide the care that makes second chances possible?
Mission
Home with us until they're home with you. Dedicated to saving homeless dogs and cats, FOHA is a no-kill shelter that provides rescue, medical care, and adoption services in the Northern Virginia and Washington DC metropolitan areas. For over 52 years, more than 18,000 cats and dogs have found a safe haven with FOHA. FOHA relies on the support of volunteers and donations to continue our rescue efforts. Friends of Homeless Animals is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Profile
The animals in FOHA’s care come from our partner shelters who believe that FOHA will give the dog or cat the best chance to find their forever family. Each dog and cat that arrives is a member of the FOHA family until (and after) he or she finds a forever home with a new adoptive family. FOHA’s dedicated team provides the love, care, and attention they deserve until a home can be found.
Located on 40 pastoral acres in Loudoun County, FOHA houses up to 65 dogs of all ages, shapes, and sizes. Many are mixed breeds, who make wonderful companions. FOHA also provides shelter for up to 30 cats and kittens in communal catteries, along with many other cats living in foster homes. FOHA also utilizes a network of foster volunteers to provide care for dogs and cats in foster homes.
